Goldenrod

This drink was inspired by a drink of the same name that was described in the book A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, which itself was inspired by the drinks at the Shalyapin Bar in the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. I've added fresh lemon juice in addition to the lemon infused vodka, as well as a dash of celery bitters. I garnish it with an impressive sculptural flake of 23 karat gold. You can find edible gold flakes at specialty food stores and on Amazon.

Ingredients
- 2 oz (57 ml) lemon infused vodka
- 1 oz (28 ml) yellow chartreuse
- 1/2 oz (14 ml) honey syrup
- 1/2 oz (14 ml) fresh lemon juice
- 3 dashes (3 dashes) celery bitters
- 23 karat edible gold leaf, for garnish
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients except the gold in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until very cold. Strain into a coupe glass over a small ice sphere, or with no ice.
- Using wooden tweezers, delicately float a large flake of gold in the center of the drink or on top of the ice sphere. Serving it on top of the ice sphere is easier as it prevents the gold from sinking. Serve immediately.

What would be the best alternative to yellow chartreuse for this?

Can’t wait to give this a try! I just got to this portion of the book and searched to see if it was a real thing, and what a treat to see that someone made it happen!!

I find myself here having googled the Goldenrod cocktail, with a copy of ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ opened on my lap at page 332. Yours is the only recipe I have found using all the ingredients mentioned in the book! However I must ask how you go about making your honey syrup as I’ve only made sugar syrup before for my cocktails – is the same method and proportions?

Hi Chloe, I’m glad you found this recipe! Yes, the honey syrup is just like simple syrup – equal parts honey and water, gently boiled until the honey fully dissolves in the water. If you wanted to use regular simple syrup in the Goldenrod, that works perfectly fine too. The honey syrup does help deepen the golden color though. You can also find instructions for honey syrup on the Mother of Dragons page, step 3, except just use plain water instead of the habanero infused water. Thanks for reaching out, and let me know what you think!

I’m on my chaise, page 332 of A Gentleman in Moscow, and did the exact same thing – googled Goldenrod cocktail, Russia, and found just this one. Love this, and although I’ve already rated it at five stars, I have not yet tried it, but will, and I am hopeful! Cheers! (I’m also listening to Chopin Op. 9, number two – lol). I don’t want this book to end.

I’m on page 332! Looking forward to trying a Goldenrod, too!
